I spent an enjoyable morning (early to late) checking various spots at Horicon
Marsh. Best spots were the boardwalk pond and the pond by the pump house along
49, with the eastern part of the Old Marsh Rd also quite good. Saw quite a few
birders, especially watching the White-faced Ibis that was actively feeding on
the east pond by the pump house along 49. Three hours later when I drove back
thru it was still there, preening. And still many birders enjoying it. 12
Black-necked Stilts were tallied with 8 on the Old Marsh Rd, 3 on the board
walk pond and 1 where the ibis was. Am Bitterns were calling at several spots.
At the A/Miller pond (Green Lake co) the number of shorebirds was drastically
down from Thur when I was last there; also the water is rapidly disappearing.
Best were many Am. Golden Plovers, with one Black-bellied Plover among them.
It was a fun day (a.m. & p.m.) with the birds and birders. Tally for the day
was 86 species.
On another note, I had a Purple Finch coming to my feeders yesterday afternoon,
first for my yard this year.
