Got out for some fresh air this afternoon. Started with a drive through Jefferson Park in Menasha. The edge of the lake ice is a bit further out than before with sturgeon spearing shanties not far away beyond that. That activity seems to have pushed many birds into the river, including the swans. Counted one Mute Swan and 18 Trumpeters mostly resting on the edge of the ice on the opposite side of the river. There were a couple darker-mantled gulls over there, too, but I forgot my spotting scope. Mostly the usual winter waterfowl, but didn't spot either the Long-tailed Duck or the Canvasbacks previously reported. There were however five beautiful Redheads swimming close to the park side of the river. Forgot my camera, too. A couple eagles flying around as well. Then I needed a walk, but didn't have much time so I took a spin around the Butterfly Trail at High Cliff State Park. Didn't expect to see much, but there was a Northern Shrike on the back end of the trail across from the golf course and not just one, but two Song Sparrows in the weeds along the edge of the creek's open water where it breached the dam. List below. Red-bellied Woodpecker 3 Northern Shrike 1 American Crow 6 Black-capped Chickadee 12 White-breasted Nuthatch 1 American Tree Sparrow 3 Song Sparrow 2 Northern Cardinal 2 -- *Andrew Reimer* *Appleton (Darboy), Calumet County* #################### You received this email because you are subscribed to the Wisconsin Birding Network (Wisbirdn).
