I have been intrigued by the fact that an aparently healthy device doesn't 
behave in the same way, in your two experiments. It makes me wonder about 
the batteries: the software and hardware should be doing the same things 
initially, in both experiments. The batteries could be just a little more 
dead in the silent experiment.
