I'm more or less in the same situation as you, with users who plain ignore my warnings about patches and stuff. The blaster attack however forced me to review free managment software, that I could use to force push updates to certain machines. A colleugueau (spelling??) sysadmin hinted about the free version of shavlik's hfnetchkpro4 lt. It supports up to 50 computers, which is more than enough for us, especially if you group them. The software works like a charm. And it's free! Hfnetchkpro4 lt in conjunction with a central SUS and a antivirusserver is all you've ever wanted. Hfnetchkpro4 lt supposedly also supports pushing officepatches. But this I've not used/been able to figure out how. HTH.
