[windows2000] Messenger Service

I seem to have a few thousand messages trying to get through from the
messenger service on one of my windows 2000 server. One of those
Administrator Alerts. I have stopped and disabled the messenger
service on that machine but they are still popping up.
Is there somewhere these live that I can wipe them out? It was the
result of a tape error which has since been fixed but it still insists
on popping up all the messenger alerts on the console.
