~ Actually the best product often doesn't win. Take VCR for example,
beta was in every technical sense a better format, but VHS won due to
marketing issues. Microsoft has become a monopoly for pretty much the
same reasons that AOL is so popular. Despite the problems with each,
they target to the lowest common denominator for technical skills and,
at the beginning, budget, this gives them an incredible install base,
once so many people are using it, there is an avalanche effect that
tends to force everyone else to give in.
~ To use your Doritos example, imagine that if you go to the grocery
store, the chips isle has all Doritos brand chips except for one bag of
lays because "thats what everyone likes", even if you did like something
else you'd be pretty much stuck with Doritos. Soon all dip
manufacturers would be optimizing their flavors to work best with
Doritos, and wouldn't taste quite right with pringles or lays, they'd
excuse this by saying "well, no one really eats those chips anyways".
Once everyone was pretty much stuck with Doritos, they could then raise
the price several dollars per bag, and you'd be out of luck unless you
wanted to make your own dip or order your chips online, etc.
