To toss in, paid sites are definitely out there, a couple that come
to mind top of my head are:
The Well
Salon
ESPN

The Well is fine because it is SO old and integrated with the old
skool crowd, but Salon as paid content was a new thing when it came
about back in what 1996? I remember there were quite a few articles
and op ed pieces on whether they would survive with that cost model,
when they went to paid premium content in 2001. They're still around,
so....? ESPN is the same, cost for premium 'Insider' content and live
streaming of games.
