there are a variety of examples of paid content sites. the wall street
journal comes to mind but more sites are blending free vs. paid (or
premium) content. think times select or espn insider. on the other
hand, cnn pipeline used to be a paid service but is now free.

there are basically four business models for conten and various
publishers are mixing and matching them:

1. free and ad-supported
2. pay-per-view
3. subscription
4. syndication

we have a library of videos from the software and information industry
association content division that you might want to peruse. many of
the speakers are discussing this very issue.

you can view it here: www.scribemedia.org/siia/

you can also do a search for "econsm"... or actually, here's the
search link: http://www.scribemedia.org/?s=econsm&x=0&y=0

this is a series of videos we did with paidcontent.org... again, the
topics often revolve around media monetization, disruption and
opportunity.

enjoy.
