Updates from Gallaudet

Subject: Update from Gallaudet
Dear Chapter presidents and liaison officers,
I am Mike Kaika, '72, GUAA Board Member, Home Region.
Attached you will find a resolution and letter from the GUAA Board to the Gallaudet Board of Trustees. Please share this email with your chapter members. It is not possible for the Alumni Office to send every alumni an email so I am taking the opportunity to share the following with you.
We want you to be aware that the GUAA Board of Directors, whom you have elected, have been on top of everything that has happened to date. President Andy Lange flew in last Thursday and will be back again tonite and will participate in the graduation ceremonies as GUAA President.
As all of you are aware, the protest at Gallaudet has entered its 11th day. We are hoping the protest over the selection of Dr. Jane Fernandes as Gallaudet's 9th president will be resolved soon.
Today (Thursday), the Board of Trustees invited members of the FSSA (faculty, staff, students, and alumni) to meet with them and discuss their issues and concerns. I think we had a very productive 2 1/2 hour meeting. There were several members from the FSSA...for the alumni, we had Stephen Hlibok, '85, Seth Bravin, '96, Jane Golightly, '69, and myself. All together, the Board of Trustees heard from about 30 representatives. After our meeting, we all felt that we did all we could to convince the BOT to take action to remove Dr. Fernandes as president and reopen the search process again. Time will tell. The BOT is meeting again this afternoon and tomorrow morning before commencement.
There are still about 30 tents set up on the lawn at the 8th Street entrance. The protest has been very peaceful and well organized. Faculty, staff, students, alumni have been working hard over the past 11 days and they will continue their efforts until a change has been made.
You should check out the FSSA website (www.gallyfssa.org) and its links for up-to-date information, letters from GUAA, NAD, and other organizations. There are also a number of blogs that have been reporting on this protest.

While they are good, we feel we should direct you to the FSSA website. You probably know of the other blogs anyway.
Tomorrow is graduation day and the FSSA has assured everyone that no outburst or protest will happen. We all hope that a "lone stray cat" doesn't ruin the day.
If any breaking news happens, I will send an email to all of you again but since we all know how fast word travels, my email will probably be "old news." Nonetheless, the GUAA Board agreed that you should be kept in the loop.
If Chapters want to send in their letters of support for the protest, or even in support of the Board of Trustees selection of Dr, Fernandes as the next president of Gallaudet University, you are encouraged to do so. You could send it to the FSSA website.
If you have any questions, feel free to send them to me at mpkaika@xxxxxxxxx
Thank you.
Mike Kaika
