Gallaudet University Alumni Association News
-- 50th Anniversary Event Update

50th Anniversary Event Update
My fellow alumnus of Gallaudet University Alumni Association- Wisconsin
Chapter,
The feedback that I have received is that most think that we should not
have any event that will conflict with the volleyball tornament that
will be on Saturday, September 30 and Sunday, October 1, 2006 when the
Gallaudet University Volleyball team plays against the University of
Wisconsin- Whitewater. The Deaf themselves wants to socialized, drink,
and chat, etc. during the tournament and not have any event that will be
a distraction. The purpose of the weekend is that we will all have a
good time.
There were several ideas on how to approach the 50th anniversary event,
it seems that the best bet was to have a get-together event on a small
scale at a local facility in Delavan the night before on Friday,
September 29 at 6:00 pm. Most of the people who come are those locally
or within driving distance. Small scale event means we average about 20.
Hundreds are expected for the volleyball tournament so we can keep two
things separate.
We have thought about Sunday night but people will be tired and it will
conflict with those who loves football. We thought about Saturday
morning, but people don't want to get up early and also not good time
frame. We have thought about having it after DAW but other organizations
may have comedy night, etc.
The national GUAA will be involved with us that weekend and we have to
coordinate with them as they will like to promote Gallaudet University.
I have received confirmation from Stephen Hlibok, Deaf Financial
Consultant with Merrill Lynch that he will be speaker at our GUAA 50th
Anniversary Event, all expenses are paid by Merrill Lynch in regards to
airfare, accomondations, etc.
I have also received confirmation from Trudy Suggs as our second
speaker. The American Postal Workers Union is our sponsor and will pay
for her expenses.
During the banquet, we will give out 10 emergency road kits donated by
the Tri-City National Bank.
I will like your permission to go ahead and plan a small
workshop/banquet in Delavan starting at 6pm with workshops, the Banquet
being at 7:30 on Friday night, September 29th at local Delavan
facilities. It should be over by 9:30. No cash bar. Casual not formal.
Please reply asap as I need your permission. Also like your suggestions
as to where good place to eat and meet in Delavan area.
I will very much like this to be my last event I take care of, I started
several years ago with establishment of open-captioned movies at local
theatres starting with Dances with Wolves to Jurassic Park and Titanic,
Live DPN cable broadcast, having many speakers over the years like
Congressman Steve Gundersen, Gilbert Eastman, Don Pettigill, etc.
Working with Zola on Deaf Awareness event with Bernard Bragg and Jack
Cannon. Working with WAD having sponsor a "Living Trust" workshop during
their conference, working with Wisconsin Historic Society on Civil War
weekend with two full-time interpreters, working with David Eklof on
having a Casino Belle River Gambling cruise, working with Beyond
Boundaries, having a Harry Potter tour of England with an Asl
interpreter from Colorado, going to Gallaudet to visit my nephew who is
a student and also my stepson at MSSD, having "BUMMY" do a workshop on
Parliamentary Procedures. Since that Dr. King Jordan is retiring, I
myself will retired soon from many years at the United States Postal
Service. I think that this banquet be my last event being involved with
and than I will step down and let the younger alumus lead the chapter
into the future with their vision of Gallaudet in the 21st Century and
leadership that can inspires us all. Thank you for your support over the
years. My signature mark that I left behind is obvious now that
open-captioned movies are now shown regularly by the Marcus theatre
chains throughout the state of Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Indiana,
and Ohio every Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
Don't forget I need your permission and feedbacks. I hope you all will
come to support your Gallaudet Volleyball team with your spirit and have
a good get-together the night before.OK Have a nice upcoming weekend.
Thank you for your time and patient in this matter.
