Bring the Children to Touch A Truck Day this Saturday!  This special event for children is scheduled for Saturday, October 2nd  in the parking lot of the DuBois Mall nearest the Hampton Inn.  Glenn O. Hawbaker and the Greater DuBois Chamber with support from DuBois Kiwanis Club offer children from the surrounding area the opportunity to see, hear, pretend to drive, etc. all types of vehicles from all businesses of our region.  Various businesses donate their time and vehicles to allow children to learn about vehicle and personal safety during this few hours of entertainment.  This is a FREE event – we simply ask if the children can bring a can of food to share with others, it would be appreciated. 

 

All About A Party & Costumes will be holding a costume contest and will co-sponsor the Annual Red Cross Blood Drive with Sunny106.  This event will be held on Saturday, October 2nd in conjunction with the Annual Touch A Truck Day sponsored by Glenn O. Hawbaker, Inc. and The Greater DuBois Chamber of Commerce.  So, come to “Scare Fair 2010” for all the “Ghoulish” activities from the Mall Merchants and a great day of fun at the DuBois Mall! The costume contest will be held from 2 – 4 on Saturday October 2nd.  There are four age categories and 3 winners in each category: Funniest, Scariest and Best Costume.  Winners will receive a $25 Gift Certificate to the Halloween & Costume Shop.  You can register at All About A Party & Costumes’ Halloween & Costume Shop in the DuBois Mall.  The Halloween & Costume Shop has thousands of unique costumes, accessories, 138 wigs, 107 hats and over 200 masks in stock!  They have sizes to fit you; from infant to adult 3X and everything in between.

Hospital Avenue Project Update for Week of Sept. 27 –The following information is an update for PennDOT’s Hospital Avenue/Dixon Avenue realignment project in DuBois for the week of Sept. 27. All work is weather dependent.

·         New traffic patterns will continue on South Main Street. The contractor will continue working in the center lane on South Main Street. Traffic delays are expected. Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes. Workers will be preparing to place the new concrete pavement.

·         New traffic patterns will continue on Dixon Avenue. Dixon Avenue will continue to be restricted to one lane between Smithfield Street and Hospital Avenue. Dixon Avenue will be one way until further notice. Traffic will only be able to travel from Smithfield Street to Hospital Avenue. All other traffic will need to follow the signed detour.

·         The contractor will be excavating and placing storm-water, drainage pipe on Dixon Avenue in the closed lane.

·         Motorists are advised to watch for slow moving and stopped vehicles through the entire work zone

The overall project will re-align Hospital Avenue with Dixon Avenue.  Work includes roadway widening, new traffic signals, and improved access to DRMC. The job is scheduled to run through late November of this year.

Ed Rendell and other partner organizations as they open the doors of Pennsylvania’s Elk Country of the PA WILDS for the Grand Opening Ceremony of the Elk Country Visitors Center on Wednesday, October 6th at 10:30 am.  The center is located in Benezette.  >From I-80, take Penfield exit and Route 153 North and turn right at junction with Route 255.  Travel North to Weedville, bear right on Route 555 and travel 9 miles to Benezette.  Turn left on Winslow Hill Rd. and follow signs.

“A Website is a Terrible Thing to Waste” is the workshop title for an event to be held at the Hampton Inn on Thursday, October 21st from 8-noon.  There will be some fundamentals, reasons why websites are so critical for businesses, Internet marketing, website features, and more! The final Downtown Block Party for the season is scheduled for Friday Oct. 8th from 5-8pm - Fall into DuBois; Fire trucks will be on display (Firemen's Week), food of the season, bobbing for apples, Farmer's Market, Polka Band and demo, live band TBA! This Block Party is the last in the series and kicks off a whole weekend of downtown business shopping specials, sidewalk sales and other promotions.

 

Haven House Shelter will present their annual fundraiser “Performing Hearts” at the DuBois Are Middle School on Friday, October 8th at 7pm.  This is an important event in the efforts to allow the shelter to provide help and assistance to the thousands who have used the facility.  Tickets are $12 and available at the Greater DuBois Chamber, Rosie’s Book Shoppe, or S&T Bank on the Boulevard.

The 3rd Annual DuBois Area Historical Society Spirit of DuBois Lantern Walk ventures into one of DuBois’ most historic areas, the Penn State DuBois Campus and its neighborhood, Saturday, Oct. 16, with tours beginning at 6 p.m. Penn State DuBois, celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2010, is located on what was originally the property of City of DuBois patriarch John DuBois. Admission to the Spirit of DuBois Lantern Walk is $5 for adults and $3 for students, with children sixth grade and younger free if accompanied by an adult. All proceeds benefit the DuBois Area Historical Society. The program is suitable for all ages. Moderator Confirmed for Candidate Forum:  AARP and the Greater DuBois Chamber announce a Candidates Forum for Saturday morning, October 23rd from 8:30am to noon.  The location will be the meeting room of Lakeside United Methodist Church at 420 First Street, beside Tannery Dam.  Registration, coffee and donuts begins at 8:30 am with questions at 9:00am.  First on the agenda will be the candidates for US Congress:  Congressman Glenn “GT” Thompson will meet his challenger Michael Pipe.    Then State Representative, Matt Gabler and his opponent Frank Straub will speak.  Mr. Jay Philippone, owner of Priority Communications will be the moderator for the event.  Questions will be prepared in advance – none will be taken from the audience.  If you have issues you feel need to be addressed by both or all candidates, please forward to the DuBois Chamber for inclusion.  The format will provide for timed responses and/or rebuttals to all questions.  Advance registration can be made by emailing the Chamber at dacc@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx or 371-5010.
