Hi Ciaran and Nickie

Thanks so much for this info. I'm thinking now that it might be worthwhile
waiting for the trials on that Australian box to see what happens before
purchasing a saorview box for my main TV. If I do buy a new TV for the kitchen
I probably will buy a saorview ready one, even if we can't access the menus!!
I'll just use the "accessible" Saorview box on my main TV for any schedule
checking or recording!! (I'm optomistic, and hope that such a box will become
available before end of next year!
I agree that a box which at least is compatible with audio description would
make sense.

Thanks again lads.

Hi Emer,

Unfortunately, there are no accessible boxes currently available for Saorview.
There are however trials taking place with a box from Australia which is
compatible with the Irish system. Equipment like the Goodmans Smart-Talk box
available in the UK will not work here, which is a real pity.

You're correct in thinking that televisions with Saorview built-in are not
accessible. No speech-enabled integrated solutions like this exist
unfortunately.

Although there is very little audio described content on the Irish channels at
the moment, you might consider purchasing a Saorview box that can receive audio
description. Stand-alone boxes are available from around €60. Make sure to shop
around - all the major high-street electrical stores stock them. Also -
remember that if it's not Saorview approved, then don't buy it as there's no
guarantee it'll be compatible. UK Freeview equipment will not work here.

More information on Saorview is available at:
http://www.saorview.ie

Hope this helps,

Ciaran

Hi all

Apologies if this question has already been covered somewhere on this list.

Just wondering is there any update on the Saorview situation.

My position is that I've currently got an older flat-screen TV, with just free
to air (can't afford sky etc. just now), and am also thinking of getting a
second TV for the kitchen.

My questions are:

1. Given that I'll have to get a Saorview box for the other TV, are they still
inaccessible?

2. For the new TV, I presume it's vital to get one that's Saorview ready? But I
also presume that this too in terms of menus etc. will be inaccessible?

Would very much appreciate any guideance/ideas anyone might have.

All the best
Emer

Hi Ciaran and all,

Thanks again Ciaran for sending on the info below in relation to UPC and their
new remote record solution.

I've played with this a bit over the weekend and found it very accessible.
Whilst the desktop version can be used, the mobile site is much cleaner and
would be recommended at the moment for screen reader users.

Interestingly I have something series linked on my box at the moment but the
web application has not detected that, I think it only shows you programmes
that you scheduled through the app itself, which would make some sense I guess.

Regards,

Stuart.

Hi all,

Finally, it looks like UPc are about to introduce their remote record facility.
It will allow users to schedule recordings over the web or via smartphones.

The online web interface (intended for use on mobile devices) is available at:
http://m.tv-guide.upc.ie

It seems very accessible, at least with IE7 and JFW12 anyway. My box is
currently powered off, so can't comment on how easy it is to schedule an actual
recording.

The desktop version will be accessible via MyUPC at:
https://service.upc.ie/cckservices/myupc/

A native iPhone app will be launched in the coming days. Other platforms will
have to make do with the mobile version linked to above for now.

A valid MyUPC account is required to use the service.

I'd be very interested to hear how people find this, it's one of the big
advantages Sky had over UPC.
