Good afternoon,

Just in case some of you haven't heard about it already, there is a new
antivirus tool available from Microsoft called Security essentials. This does
most of what other antivirus applications do.

An anti virus application that has been touted as the best in terms of
accessibility for a good while was Nod32. However, GWMicro, the creator of
Window eyes are encouraging users to move to security essentials as they claim
it is more accessible.

If any of you are thinking of switching, I would urge you not to. Security
essentials is a great product. It integrates very well with Windows but it
does not include a very important feature, Heuristic analysis of new possible
infections.

Heuristic analysis is a check that determines if there is malicious intent or
abilities when an application is run.

The benefit of this is that even if the antivirus application that you use does
not have a particular virus in its database, it still has the potential to
catch it before it does harm to your computer.

This can happen often. With the rare exception, antivirus companies release
updates once per week. That leaves a week where new virus writers can get
something onto your computer.

This is yet another incident where GWMicro are being irresponsible with the
advice they are dishing out. The last time was when they slammed
Freedomscientific's driver signing program instead of productively providing
solutions.
