Hi Darragh,

You raise an interesting point.

Mary Emerson, recently did a podcast on MS Security Essentials for Blind
Cool Tech.

She made the point that, even though she has a paid subscription to
Grisoft' anti-virus and firewall, she's removed them, and installed MS
Security Essentials instead. She's also removed much loved progs like Ad
Aware and Spybot S&D.

her main reason is that MS Security Essentials is very easy to use.

Incidentally, is there a difference between Grisoft's combined anti-virus
and firewall, and their Personal Identity program?

I downloaded a trial version of Personal Identity (or whatever it's
called,) as a stopgap,As my Grisoft anti-virus / firewall had expired.
Now that I've renewed my subscription and reinstalled the program, I keep
getting expiry reminders concerning Personal Identity

I just ignore them as I never subscribed to the program.

Am I correct in assuming that Personal Identity is separate from the
Anti-virus / firewall prog, and not a part of it

Regards with thanks,

Eamonn

Good afternoon,

Just in case some of you haven't heard about it already, there is a new
antivirus tool available from Microsoft called Security essentials. This
does most of what other antivirus applications do.

An anti virus application that has been touted as the best in terms of
accessibility for a good while was Nod32. However, GWMicro, the creator of
Window eyes are encouraging users to move to security essentials as they
claim it is more accessible.

If any of you are thinking of switching, I would urge you not to. Security
essentials is a great product. It integrates very well with Windows but it
does not include a very important feature, Heuristic analysis of new
possible infections.

Heuristic analysis is a check that determines if there is malicious intent
or abilities when an application is run.

The benefit of this is that even if the antivirus application that you use
does not have a particular virus in its database, it still has the
potential to catch it before it does harm to your computer.

This can happen often. With the rare exception, antivirus companies
release updates once per week. That leaves a week where new virus writers
can get something onto your computer.

This is yet another incident where GWMicro are being irresponsible with the
advice they are dishing out. The last time was when they slammed
Freedomscientific's driver signing program instead of productively
providing solutions.
