Hi,

JAWS11 is said to be a compatible version, when you install the scripts. I have installed them, also in JAWS10.

However, they don't make much difference at all. the buttons aren't labelled, merely having numbers. this is a design issue, and the RTÉ Web design team needs to implement the accessibility components that are, apparently, contained in the Adobe Flex software.

I can tell you that, playing a late late Show clip, the 3 button is the play/pause. In JAWS10 we get this silly 'open parent document button' at the top and bottom. And I did install the latest Flash, to make sure I had it; same result.

Dear Paul,

Thank you for contacting the RTÉ player with your query.

The RTÉ player is committed to making its service as accessible as possible, to include people with visual impairments.

We have recently introduced support for JAWS for Windows which is a screen-reading application from Freedom Scientific.

For more information about the JAWS screen-reader, please visit the Freedom Scientific website (http://www.hj.com/fs_products/software_jaws.asp <https://owa.rte.ie/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://www.hj.com/fs_products/software_jaws.asp> ).

Please note, to use JAWS with the RTÉ player, additional software from Adobe is required which is free to download here: http://www.adobe.com/accessibility/products/flex/jaws.html <https://owa.rte.ie/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://www.adobe.com/accessibility/products/flex/jaws.html> .

RTÉ Player also provides full support for keyboard only navigation.

The current version of RTÉ player is a beta service and any additional assistive technologies will be reviewed in the context of future developments that may be made to the service.

For more details on RTÉ’s Access Services as outlined in the RTÉ Corporate Responsibility Report 2008 see http://www.rte.ie/about/pdfs/rtecorporateresponsibility2008_Eng.pdf <https://owa.rte.ie/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://www.rte.ie/about/pdfs/rtecorporateresponsibility2008_Eng.pdf>

Best wishes,

The RTÉ player Team

Subject: Inaccessibility of RTE Player to Blind People

Dear sir/Madam.

Many of my friends often recommend that I watch programmes I may have missed again on the RTE Player. As a blind user, I find the player totally inaccessible and frustrating and have recently discovered that other blind and visionimpaired people have had a similar experience to mine.

I realise that the player uses flash but so does the BBC site and their player is properly labelled and usable. I feel sure that RTE could emulate this.

Perhaps the computer accessibility section of The National Council for the Blind

Could advise you in this matter. I would strongly recommend that you contact them.

Hoping that this problem can be solved in the not too distant future.

Yours faithfully

Paul Dromey
