Inspired by Kurt's email of his early morning birding, I decided to try to
find Chuck's-wills-widow and Whip-poor-wills in Orange Co., VA this morning.
From 4:00 am to 5:30 I drove to the few spots I knew and thought might be
good for Chuck's and Whips, but I was not having too much luck. Then I drove
down Route 614, near Locust Grove and heard many Whips and my lifer Chucks
singing away!!! Later in the morning I drove back down this road, to see
where I was, once the sun was up, and I heard Meadowlarks, Grasshopper
Sparrows and Prairie Warblers all singing. In Wilderness Nat. Mil. Park, on
Hill Ewell Drive, a Common Loon flew over, and many Indigo Buntings were
present. At Lake of the Woods a Great-crested Flycatcher (FOS) was heard and
an Osprey flew over on Saturday night, kind of unexpected for the middle of
the Piedmont!
Great Fun!
Cheers,
Phil
