Had a good brief visit to the Luther Jackson Middle School (aka Chimney Swift
Haven) [on Gallows Road at the Intersection of Arlington Blvd Rte 50 and
Gallows Road in Virginia], where several hundred birds were settling down, and
Jay and Carol Hadlock were energized to bring groups out over the weekend, so I
felt compelled to check out the corridor near the Brawner Farm, off Lee
Highway, Rte 29, beyond Bull Run Park, after Featherbed Lane and the cemetery,
on the right side, before Pageland Road. I was there at 07:45 Sunday am.
An olive sided flycatcher and a very loud Red Tailed Hawk Family Reunion were
my highlights.
It was noisy near the First Jackson Brigade sign, north of the farmhouse, but
most birds were heard, not seen.
High Wires on the Pageland side, to the West, held one Broad Winged Hawk.
Tree swallows, Catbirds, Cowbirds, and one who looked like a female dark-eyed
junco. Is this possible at this time? The bill was pink.
Vegetation is thick here, with invasions of honeysuckle on the trees, giving
the birds added cover.
Many thanks to Donald Zweig, who provided the reminder that Broad Wing time is
coming.
