Hi VA-Bird,
The Potomac at Great Falls is finally low enough to expose fishing rocks for
numerous Gt Blue Herons. Thirty bird species this morning (Saturday June
28) at Great Falls NP, VA, including four Cedar Waxwings hawking insects
between the aqueduct dam and the falls. A fluffy Gnatcatcher fledgling was
following a parent through the picnic area. Acadian flycatchers were
abundant in the woods. At 9:00 AM a Wood Thrush was loudly singing.
After weeks under water the Swamp Trail was just muddy, but only held one
species of warbler, Parula. Great Crested Flycatcher, Pee-wee and Phoebe
were all in good voice. Only one Carolina Wren all day.
Sunny, not too humid, and DEET not required.
Gt Falls NP VA is six miles from Exit 44 of the Capitol Beltway, I-495.
Take Rt 193 (Georgetown Pike) toward Great Falls. After five miles turn
right at the light, onto Old Dominion Drive. Follow Old Dominion to the fee
booth ($5 per car; $20 for an annual pass).
