Subject: Lesser Black-backed Gull
Birders,
About noon today, Rosemarie and I observed a Lesser Black-backed Gull
at Lake Orange; also, one Black-backed, 6 Herring and ca. 1500
Ring-billed Gulls, 9 Bufflehead, 9 Hooded Mergansers. At the Orange
County Landfill, we saw about 600 Ring-billed Gulls, 12 Herring Gulls,
2 Great Black-backed Gulls and one immature Bald Eagle.
Interesting birds in the yard (for us) were:
A male Yellow-bellied Sapsucker that has claimed the suet feeder in
the front yard and spends 2-3 hours per day sitting on the feeder
(Yellow-bellied Suetsucker). It chases away other birds from the
"it's" feeder.
Yesterday, Robins were eating cracked corn that was spread on the
frozen snow.
A couple of days ago, when the temperature was in single digits, we
observed three Chickadees entering a nest box. I believe I've read
that Chickadees will sometimes cluster in nest boxes for warmth.
Today, as we were returning from Lake Orange, we were bemoaning the
fact that we had not seen Wild Turkeys around the yard since fall; on
cue, four Wild Turkeys were in the front yard.
Other yard birds: Fox Sparrow (1), Winter Wren (1) Purple Finches
(2), Brown Creeper (1), Red-breasted Nuthatch (1), et. al.
Happy birding,
George Harris
