I found a Bewick's wren this morning on Cockpit Pt. Rd. in Dumfries, at the
bottom of the hill near the small pond on the left. It flew across the road
and ducked into some vegetation under the guard rail. My first impression was
winter wren, but part of my brain was telling me the undersides were white or
very pale. I pished, and it popped up, giving me good looks of its white
supercillium and white underparts.
The rest of the morning was just ok. Cockpit Pt. Rd. was decidedly un-birdy,
lacking the frantic activity that frequently marks a morning in early May. I
also visited Leesylvania State Park, Metz Wetlands, and Occoquan NWR.
Leesylvania seemed to have the most activitly. I finished with 109 species,
including 22 warblers. Other notables were semipalmated plover (ash pond),
Tennessee warbler (Leesylvania), Wilson's warbler (Leesylvania), Canada warbler
(Leesylvania), northern waterthrush (Occoquan), yellow-billed cuckoo (several
stops), white-crowned sparrow (Occoquan), and northern bobwhite (Occoquan).
