Hello,
I have been through all of the UEB documentation I can find and still do
not find an answer to this particular question.
I am transcribing documents into UEB. One of the documents contains a
single German word that includes a non-UEB symbol. In particular, `Gießen`.
The non-Roman, non-UEB symbol `ß` is represented in German with the same
dot-pattern as UEB strong contraction for `the` (dots 2346). Using German
braille, all Roman letters in that word are identical to UEB Roman letters.
All of the UEB documentation I find that provides guidance on representing
non-UEB symbols provides code-switch indicators for words and passages, but
I find no reference to a code-switch indicator that would operate on a
single symbol (see Rules of UEB, section 14, p. 199).
From this it appears I should use the code-switch indicator for a word and
transcribe `Gießen` using the combination of UEB-Roman and non-UEB
symbols. Following Rules of UEB, 14.2.3, p. 203, a transcriber's note
should precede this use of code-switch indicators and non-UEB symbols.
Is my interpretation of the rules accurate? Is my conclusion accurate?
Best,
_don
