This Wednesday, March 26th, is a big night for the Moth Study Site at Winged
Deer Park. John Pickering of Discover Life will be our special guest at the
reception being held at the Headquarters Building starting at 7:00 pm. John Is
the creator of the huge nature website “Discover Life”
http://www.discoverlife.org/. Our study site is a part of a network of similar
sites from around the globe and organized by Discover Life. The data collected
from these sites will be used to develop strategies for dealing with
environmental issues such as climate change. The website also serves as a
resource for identifying and learning about all types of plants and animals.

This presentation is free and open to the public. It is intended for anyone
with an interest in nature and citizen science but is especially geared for
those wanting to get involved with the project. It is a fascinating way to
learn and contribute to a very special cause. It’s also a heck of a lot of fun.
You can contact me if you would like more information.

Last week was another cool and slow week but still had some interesting
critters. People are often surprised by the many unusual appearances that moths
can have. The Morning Glory Plume Moth, like the one I photographed at the park
on March 19th, has an airplane posture at rest. It is in the family
Pterophoridae. They are attracted to lights and can sometimes be found during
the daytime.
