It's probably just a mutation. The wing looks too clean for it to be damage.

Subject: [TN-Butterflies] Unusual Pearl Crescent

 
After a several weeks of fewer Pearl Crescents, 
there was a second wave of them in Roane County this week.  Among them was 
this unusual individual, photographed Friday June 25:

I can't tell whether the bleached area on 
the right hindwing is due to the presence of white scales, or due to the 
absence 
of scales altogether.  The ventral side (inserts) doesn't show 
the same effect.
 
Any ideas about what happened here?
