After a several weeks of fewer Pearl Crescents, there was a second wave of them in Roane County this week. Among them was this unusual individual, photographed Friday June 25: http://i972.photobucket.com/albums/ae204/DougLepidoptera/Roane_Co/PearlCrescent25Jun10.jpg I can't tell whether the bleached area on the right hindwing is due to the presence of white scales, or due to the absence of scales altogether. The ventral side (inserts) doesn't show the same effect. Any ideas about what happened here? Doug Bruce Oak Ridge
