I'm sad to report that the great egrets, blue herons and green herons that
were nesting in the swamps just west of me on Island Road are no longer
there. They were present earlier in the year, I heard their sqawking, etc.
back before the cold spell but now the area is silent and abandoned. I fear
that the new landowner on the other side of the swamp may have scared them
away in his zealous (and unsuccessful) attempts to rid his land of beaver,
which included the "blowing of dams", apparently an irresistable activity
to many men. I have had several conversations with him on the topic of
wildlife habitat, and he seemed knowledgable and cooperative, but primarily
concerned with developing habitat for the species favored by hunters
(except duck, apparently). I think the beavers got to him, damaging his new
lake's levee, and flooding some of the farmland he rents out. I hope things
settle back down and reach some sort of beaver/human compromise, and maybe
the nesting will resume next year. Can only hope...

I don't think it's possible they could have already fledged and gone, but
admit, I didn't take note of the date I first heard them in the rookery.
Maybe they did get out of there early?
