I ran the Wrigley BBS route yesterday (5/29/2011), the 46th consecutive run of this route and my 5th time on it. I tallied a total of 74 species, including 12 species of wood warblers. The species total was only a teeny a bit below the median for recent years, but that warbler total was rather low and the lowest since 2003. It felt like hot weather was suppressing woodland songsters, but that was just a subjective impression. As I mentioned yesterday, with one exception I don't think it was the near-ubiquitous periodical cicadas.

I found no species that were new for the route, nor any that had only been recorded a few times previously. My Turkey Vulture total of 32 shattered the old record of 20 (set last year). Hot weather and good thermals contributed some to this, but I also saw a surprising number of TVs perched and on the ground as well. Totals of 9 Wild Turkeys (first recorded in 2001), 13 Pileated Woodpeckers, and 44 American Crows (tie), were also records for the route.

Regular species that were missed were Northern Bobwhite (for only the second time, also missed in 2006), Green Heron, and Yellow Warbler. Singles each of Cerulean Warbler and Prothonotary Warbler made themselves evident, but no other uncommon warbler species showed themselves contributing to the relatively low warbler count.

And, finally, I noted Magicicada tredecassini at 34 stops, including nearly every stop after 7:20 a.m. Three stops featured distant massive choruses muffled by intervening forest, yielding that surreal "hovering alien spaceship" hum effect that I love.
