Chad Smith and I searched Roan Mountain and Hampton Creek Cove for a few
special birds today with great success.

We started at the cove with a singing Golden-winged Warbler just above the
parking area. It was also present and still singing in the same spot as we
left the area.
Of some disappointment, it was the only GW Warbler seen there.
Willow Flycatcher was also present, but the best find was a tape responsive
Black-billed Cuckoo. His center of activity seemed to be at the stream
crossing in the field on the right near the sign "first line of defense" with
picture of a bass (not sure of the significance)

On to Roan Mountain with a singing GW Warbler across the stream behind Picnic
Shelter #1, Least Flycatchers higher up, a flyover N Raven at mid-elevation,
and an Alder Flycatcher off the AT. No sign of crosbills but the cone crop
look good

A quick stop at Melton Hill Dam on the way home yielded BH Nuthatch at the
campground and the end to a fine day

Special thanks to Rick Knight, James Brooks, Roy Knispel, and Nora Schubert

Cheers
