Phillip Casteel flushed a short-eared owl in Phase III of Shelby Bottoms yesterday during Christmas Count. So I met him there this evening to see if we could see it as it started its nightly hunting. We got there about 4:45 p.m. Just as it was getting dark, shortly after 5:00 p.m., we saw it fly across the field and over the tree line to the south of the field. Phase III is the north end of the Bottoms. You take Rosebank to Welcome, turn right onto Welcome, then take the first left onto Forest Green. Forest Green dead ends at the parking lot for Shelby Bottoms. The owl roosts in the second field. There is a large mound of dirt in this field. We stood on the mound and looked out over the field.
