Douglas Lake, Cocke county, 7/12/09, 5-8 PM, by canoe Lake elevation: 991.6 We, along with Larry Ball & Kristen Roberts, paddled from the coal tipple at Rankin Bottoms to the backwaters along Holt Town Rd., where some of the lake's highest elevation mudflats are located. There we found an odd trio of migratory shorebirds among the usual killdeer crowd. We also got to watch a juvenile osprey taking flight from its nest after prompting by its parents. Near the end of our trip, a big flock of great egrets flew in from the Nolichucky River to join the already-crowded roost across east of the tipple.
