A similar season here in Houston County.? Our first hummingbird arrived April
11th (a typical date here).? In a week we had half a dozen and then they all
disappeared.? In a few weeks they returned and about ten are feeding now.?

John,
Hummingbird migration has been strange in our part of Middle Tennessee this
year. Our first hummer arrived on April 6 and soon there were a couple
dozen. But suddenly in late April they just all disappeared and it was June
2 before the next wave arrived and stayed. We now have nearly 100 at ours
and the neighbors feeders and the babies are increasing the number as they
leave the nests.
One birding friend from Woodbury emailed in early May in tears because she
thought she had killed all her hummingbirds. After cleaning the feeders with
a recommended solution of bleach and water just before they left on a three
week trip in April, on their return they had none even though her daughter
had maintained the feeders. She was so relieved to hear that for some
reason the hummers had just disappeared in our area.
I think this might help explain what happened with your neighbor. Maybe the
hummers are not using your feeders because by the time they arrived there
was so much natural food available. Some people in our area told us no
hummingbirds ever came to their feeders this year in the first or second
wave we had at our house. Just a strange situation maybe caused by the late
spring. Our missing spring birds were warblers as they did not come through
our yard as they have always done in the six years since we moved to this
location. For a while there we thought Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring" had
happened in Smithville.
