5/9/08 Memphis (Ensley, President's Island, Eagle Lake) I arrived at Ensley at around 7:30, and spent the majority of the day in this area, running into Q.B. Gray, Jay Walko, and Eric Gooch in the process. Neither of the goodies from the previous day were refound, the Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks or Marbled Godwits. There were still 18 species of shorebirds at the Pits though, so still a very nice day. There wasn't a a Peregrine scare all day to flush many of the birds out of the weedy areas they were in. Shorebirds were: Semipalmated Plover 6 Killdeer many Black-necked Stilt many Greater Yellowlegs 1 Lesser Yellowlegs many Spotted Sandpiper 8 Sempalmated Sandpiper 100+ Western Sandpiper 1 Least Sandpiper many White-rumped Sandpiper 40 Baird's Sandpiper 1 Pectoral Sandpiper 60+ Dunlin 17 Stilt Sandpiper 200+ Short-billed Dowitcher 6 Long-billed Dowitcher 1 Wilson's Phalarope 15 (9 females) Otherwise, pretty quiet. A little time spent up at TO Fuller, produced a few warblers, with Tennessee's singing everywhere. Warbler highlights were Chestnut-sided (3), Magnolia, Cape May, Palm, Blackpoll (5). I also checked on the Painted Buntings near the Pits, and they put on a decent show, he was singing when I pulled up. I met Jeff late in the afternoon at the Western Kingbird/hybrid site, after looking unsuccessfully for the Scissor-tail at President's Island. When I pulled up, Jeff already had one pair (with a female hybrid), and we quickly found the 2nd pair in the same area. From here we went to Eagle Lake. The farthest fields at Eagle Lake, by walking out the north levee, had some shorebirds, including a Dunlin and 16 White-rumped Sandpipers. Least and Lesser Yellowlegs were trading in and out when we left, and a couple of Greaters were looking for company. Kites were moving big time yesterday afternoon, with 20+ in view at once along the bluffs here. I will post a few odd and end photos from yesterday when I have the time. Good Birding!!
