Feeling left out here in East TN (where both Snow and Ross's are somewhat rare) so thought I would join the fray. :-) I agree that any such axiom or rule of thumb is susceptible to human traits and we are more likely to reinforce the 'truth' of the rule in our own minds when evidence supports the rule than cast doubt upon it when it we see evidence that contradicts the rule ('Awww, that's just an exception'). That said, at the Pellissippi State pond here in west Knox Co, there have been 3 or 4 'lone white goose' occurrences within the last 10 years that were all Ross's. I don't know that any of these are in eBird. During that time, there was only 1 occurrence of a single white Snow Goose but not sure it counts as it was also in the company of a BLUE Snow Goose and a Greater White-fronted Goose (and the requisite Canadas). And there was a post on the Carolina Birds listserv just this morning of a 'lone white goose' in the Wilmington area... yep, Ross's.
