We can check some data... Total all-time eBird submissions for Middle Tennessee: Occurrences of one lone Snow Goose: 6 (counting the bird that wintered at Shelby Bottoms only once) Occurrences of one lone Ross' Goose: 2 Actually the two "lone Ross' Geese" were both incomplete checklists that only contained that one species, so it is not definite that there were no Snow Geese present as well. So after Scott submits his list for today, his will in fact be the very first definite "lone Ross' Goose" for middle TN in eBIrd. The same for west TN: Occurrences of one lone Snow Goose: 6 Occurrences of one lone Ross' Goose: 5 In this case the checklists are all complete so the counts are good. Lone white goose is "more likely" to be a Ross'? Doesn't look like it. It is true that a larger fraction of the total Ross' have shown up as singles (since they are a lot less numerous overall), but the singles were still mostly (63%) Snows. Consider the axiom BUSTED...
