Subject: [TN-Bird] Late Aftrnoon Birding At The Honors Course
getting cut off. My computer expertise is not good enough for me to figure out
what is wrong yet. Hopefully anything of interest will get to everyone.
Yesterday evening from 6:30 PM until 7:30 I birded at The Honors Golf
Course. It turned out to be great timing. During that hour I saw 35 species.
Tops for me was a male Magnolia Warbler feeding on insects on a dead tree. The
lack of leaves enabled me to get a much better view than normal. Wondering if a
Magnolia would respond to the playing of it's song (and particularly interested
if it would respond since the breeding season was over), I played a recording
of a Magnolia. It most definitely did respond.
Other than common birds, I also saw several Wild Turkey (including some
half grown and some only 1/4 grown)
a Black & White Warbler (in same area near Magnolia Warbler), a Northern
Waterthrush and Blue Grosbeaks (female with 2 immatures). I had been seeing
male and female Blue Grosbeaks all summer but that was the first time I had
seen immatures.
Other bird species included:
Mallard
Great Blue Herron
Green Herron (adults and immatures)
Killdeer (eating insects in fairways)
Morning Dove
Chimney Swift
Ruby-throated Hummingbird
Red-bellied Woodpecker
Downy Woodpecker
Eastern Phoebe
Eastern Kingbird
Blue Jay
Carolina Chickadee
Tufted Titmouse
White-breasted Nuthatch
Carolina Wren
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher
Eastern Bluebird
American Robin
Northern Mockingbird
Pine Warbler (also eating insects in fairways)
Scarlet Tanager
Eastern Towhee
Field Sparrow
Song Sparrow
Northern Cardinal
Red-winged Blackbird
Common Grackle
House Finch
American Goldfinch
