[TN-Bird] Island 13 & vicinity; 8/29/08

Island 13 and Tiptonville Bar (Lake Co)
I finally got out again for part of yesterday for my 1st birding in west TN
since mid-May. Nothing special at all, but it was great to be out anyway!

I spent about 4 hours on Island 13, which as Nancy said, looks pretty good
right now. There were around 400 shorebirds, of only 11 species scattered
around the length of the shallow lake that forms on the interior of Island 13.
If anyone happens to go out there, be aware that there are pools on the north
side of the rock jetty as well, that quite a few birds were using. The majority
of birds were Least Sandpipers, with many of those being gorgeous juvie birds.
This is a great place to get killer looks at these beauties, as well as a great
place for a heat stroke! Highlights were as follows:

Black-bellied Plover 1 calling bird
Semipalmated Sandpiper 40+ (most juv)
Stilt Sandpiper 2 juv.
Semipalmated 40+ (all juv.)
Western Sandpiper 30+ (a few largely basic adults, mostly juv.)
Greater Yellowlegs 4
Pectoral Sandpiper only 8

I was surprised not to have any Baird's, or Buffies, though there is no
vegetation anywhere near the pool.

The only terns I saw other than Least was a nice flock of 24 Black Terns
casually working their way down the River in Dyer Co

A few warblers were seen in my brief times in good habitat, including Yellow,
Magnolia, and American Redstart.

Tiptonville Bar had nothing on it other than Killdeer.

It's definitely time for something good to show up at Island 13, I hope to make
it back a time or two over there over the next month or so.

Good birding!!
