Tony,

Looks good if you are not planning on "production like" performance. In production my biased experience votes for one VM per CPU rule. This is especially true if you use DOS VMs (not very common though).

If you plan tests with low CPU load on your VMs, you can get 10-20 VMs out of one box. That will depend mostly on memory requirements.

Make sure your testing does not need multiple CPUs per VM. In this case get multi-CPU add-on from VMware. Another possible addition to your setup -- console redirection like HP's Lights-Out board to be able to rebuild your VM host remotely.

Hard drive wise you can get away with half, however the more the better.

If you have a say in hardware vendor selection, I would go with HP. If you can afford, get a 4CPU box (VMware will charge you extra 100%) with the same memory and HD.

Also check out Microsoft answer to VMware success with ?Virtual Server 2005?:

I cannot judge it yet, since I did not try it. I doubt that it can challenge ESX at this point.

PS.
Just to make sure we are not carried away with bigger and better toys I would advocate looking into VMware workstation which can go a long way with some sacrifices in manageability. The beauty is image compatibility ? run workstation created images on ESX and visa versa.

And look at the cost difference: under $1,300 (including hardware and VMware!) you get a hyper threaded workstation at 3GHz, 2 GB of RAM, with virtually unlimited expansion in IDE storage capacity via external fire-wire drives.

That all depends. What are you planning on testing (specific apps)?
Is the storage local (attached to onboard PERC, or additional PERC),
or via SAN?

If you are just wanting to see if applications will work on this
hardware, I don't see anything prohibiting your testing with the
PE2850 and ESX 2.1.1.

Chris
