Hi David, I will send them to you off list... unless anyone else wants them too? Ian, Could I get a copy of the reboot scripts? I have been trying to put one together for my three server ASP farm, but have not had much success, if you don't mind sending me a copy of those scripts I would greatly appreciate it. I agree 100% with this Matt. I have implemented numerous farms and I always insist on nightly reboots. I have put forth the same logical arguments as you have. Another thing I try and educate our clients about is getting them out of the massive server uptime frame of mind. It's server hardware performing desktop functions. Generally they come around to my way of thinking when I tell them that the farm and applications will have 100% availability and the servers don't need that. My reboot script (or set of scripts) sends a message to users, disables logons, sends another message, waits, kicks them out if they don't log out, reboots, deletes profiles that are still present (no matter what there are always dodgy rogue profiles kicking about!!) logs an event to the event log and then re-enables logons. I have found that implementing this has helped to solve loads of major and minor issues that were occuring in farms that I was not involved in building. We have 4 different farms (W2K MFXP) all rebooted nightly in a staggered fashion. I tell our customers who balk at nightly reboots this line of logic. Do you let your desktop Windows PC run without reboot for days on end? Now imagine the same PC being used by 30-40 people a day would you still not reboot frequently? This usually convinces them as everyone has had a Windows desktop go south on them (Yes even W2K or XP). I know where people are coming from when they ask this though. They feel the reboot simply masks underlying stability problems. I used to reboot only 1/week but the lowest common denominator is the crappiest application on the box. There is a lot of crap out there these days. It just doesn't make sense with the poorly written apps and weekly security patches that impact a terminal server these days not to clean it up with a reboot after hours nightly. >>> Andrew.Rogers@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx 2/16/2004 4:38:36 AM >>> 2 nt4 servers here, MF1.8, we reboot nightly! :o tends to solve more problems and keep things smooth i find :) Andrew --o-- >>> ssun@xxxxxxxx 13/02/04 19:44:46 >>> On a side note, I was wondering how many of you have a reboot schedule enable on your Metaframe farm. What OS and the how often you reboot. IF you stagger the reboots in different parts of the farm, etc. I've a client who absolutely refuses to schedule reboots on the farm, They have Windows 2000 farm and firmly believe that Windows 2000 does NOT require reboots. I believe that part of the problem is that they do not want unattended reboots, as they are afraid servers will not come back up. Seems kinda funky to me, but I wanted to get a feel for what the rest of the communicty is doing. Hello All, Since it's Friday I thought I'd ask something that I've been wondering for a long time. I'm a consultant and I focus 100% on Citrix and server-based computing. While I work with a lot of different IT departments, I've never actually had to run my own Citrix farm day after day. (Which means I'm either totally lucky or a total sham!) Anyway, as Citrix administrators, what's the one thing that's the biggest pain in the butt in running your Citrix farms? Printing? AV? Security Patches? Profiles? Hmm. maybe I should say "other than the users, what's the biggest pain?" :-) Just curious, Brian Brian Madden brian@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx=20 +1.202.302.3657 Visit <http://www.brianmadden.com> www.brianmadden.com for in-depth Citrix, Terminal Server, and server-based computing news and analysis, white papers, downloadable videos, and product reviews. ******************************************************** This weeks sponsor Vizioncore, Inc. --> vc-iMonitor - Performance Monitoring, Control & Reporting --> vc-iControl - Desktop & Start Menu Management & Reporting --> vc-iMapper - Drive, Printer & COM Management & Reporting http://vizioncore.com/products.html=20 ********************************************************** Useful Thin Client Computing Links are available at: http://thethin.net/links.cfm=20 *********************************************************** For Archives, to Unsubscribe, Subscribe or set Digest or Vacation mode use the below link: http://thethin.net/citrixlist.cfm=20 ******************************************************** This weeks sponsor Vizioncore, Inc. --> vc-iMonitor - Performance Monitoring, Control & Reporting --> vc-iControl - Desktop & Start Menu Management & Reporting --> vc-iMapper - Drive, Printer & COM Management & Reporting http://vizioncore.com/products.html=20 ********************************************************** Useful Thin Client Computing Links are available at: http://thethin.net/links.cfm=20 *********************************************************** For Archives, to Unsubscribe, Subscribe or set Digest or Vacation mode use the below link: http://thethin.net/citrixlist.cfm=20 ******************************************************** This weeks sponsor Vizioncore, Inc.=20 --> vc-iMonitor - Performance Monitoring, Control & Reporting=20 --> vc-iControl - Desktop & Start Menu Management & Reporting=20 --> vc-iMapper - Drive, Printer & COM Management & Reporting=20 http://vizioncore.com/products.html=20 ********************************************************** Useful Thin Client Computing Links are available at: http://thethin.net/links.cfm=20 *********************************************************** For Archives, to Unsubscribe, Subscribe or=20 set Digest or Vacation mode use the below link: http://thethin.net/citrixlist.cfm ******************************************************** This weeks sponsor Vizioncore, Inc. --> vc-iMonitor - Performance Monitoring, Control & Reporting --> vc-iControl - Desktop & Start Menu Management & Reporting --> vc-iMapper - Drive, Printer & COM Management & Reporting http://vizioncore.com/products.html ********************************************************** Useful Thin Client Computing Links are available at: http://thethin.net/links.cfm *********************************************************** For Archives, to Unsubscribe, Subscribe or set Digest or Vacation mode use the below link: http://thethin.net/citrixlist.cfm ******************************************************** This weeks sponsor Vizioncore, Inc. --> vc-iMonitor - Performance Monitoring, Control & Reporting --> vc-iControl - Desktop & Start Menu Management & Reporting --> vc-iMapper - Drive, Printer & COM Management & Reporting http://vizioncore.com/products.html ********************************************************** Useful Thin Client Computing Links are available at: http://thethin.net/links.cfm *********************************************************** For Archives, to Unsubscribe, Subscribe or set Digest or Vacation mode use the below link: http://thethin.net/citrixlist.cfm ________________________________________________________________________ This e-mail has been scanned for all viruses.
