Reminds me of the time we an old telephone circuit board, removed the memory
chips and soldered them onto a 256k Ram Disk thus doubling it's capacity to
512k. Imagine a Commodore 64/128 with a 1/2 meg ram drive. That was
sweet.

And the reason for the upgrade was that I had pestered my mother because

Aye, young people with their DIMMS...

Ok, so I'm not as much of a computer historian as some of you, but my
first computer was an old 486 Packard Bell we bought from Sams Club.
I remember typing in dir at the dos prompt and commenting on how fast it
listed. Then you push the turbo button and it lists even faster...
way cool
I talked my mother into buying more ram. $200 for a 4MB 36 pin SIMM.
I'm glad Moore's Law is still in effect.

Same here... Then I moved on to the Commodore 128 a few years later...
I
can still hear my parents yelling for me to get off the phone. They
didn't
understand that you can only move so much data at 1200 baud.

Oh dear, I feel a Yorkshire man sketch coming on.
However, scariest upgrade of my life was upgrading my Mum's Amstrad PC from 512kb to 640kb. The upgrade came on, I think 16 pieces of silicon, which had 8 legs each. Break one of the legs and you had to junk the lot. Bending back one of the legs I bent was truly scary.
