I'd start by giving them a real overview of tape technology and why it
is designed from the ground up to be a recovery solution unlike a HD.
I've had good success with LTO drives and backup exec. If they don't
want to swap out the tapes and check the logs daily maybe you can do
this daily for them remotely (service fee). You could also consider
using a single tape and appending to the tape everyday assuming the tape
has enough capacity and then swap out the tapes weekly (not ideal). It
really gets down to how much there data is worth to them.

I feel the same way and we will probably make that recommendation.
There are two reasons that I think they want to avoid tapes:

a) they don't really understand the technology

b) they don't want the hassle of having to change out tapes all the
time. the datacenter is located at a remote facility/shared datacenter
that is not staffed.

If I can find a good solution for b) then I might be able to convince
them to go this way. Any suggestions?

A lot of people are under the impression that tapes are old technology.
The truth of the matter is tape is still one of the only real reliable
ways to backup large amounts of data. I would feel much safer with a
disk to tape backup solution over just trusting disks.

we might make that recommendation but client has stated they would like
to stay away from tape for some reason. It is still early in the
discussions so I am limited as to understanding why they feel this
way...

If you're willing to spend up to 5K why not go LTO?

You could look at the Sonicwall CDP range. It has some gaping flaws IMO,
but might suit.

Otherwise www.peersyncsoftware.com <http://www.peersyncsoftware.com/>
their product is fine for backup - synch less so.

Finally avail, which is similar to persync.

Hello,

Anybody know of any good disk-based backup systems for a small company
(5 Windows Servers) Ideally I would like to keep it under $5k.

Thanks!
