Someone earlier suggested Rev drives. They are perfect for this sort of environement if you can get round (b). If not then look at some of the off-site storage mechanisms I suggested earlier. If it's only 20gb back up incrementally to your systems overnight, and then put it on tape during the day if you feel the need. You get residual commercials, the client gets more reliable backup, they don't have to worry about tape swaps. SMEs *hate* tape. They hate it because it's relatively unreliable, and needs monitoring. Software like Veritas and Arcserve are massively unreliable, uncommunicative, and throw up huge amounts of complex error messages for the SME administrator (Usually a secretary) to cope with. Tape is relatively slow, and restoring files from it is difficult for non-technicals. Don't forget many SME's are not normally operating in clean server rooms, with no dust. They have their servers balanced on boxes under stairs, don't want to buy replacement tapes, and will usually still be using the same tapes they bought several years ago. Hoping that they will run test restores is ... optimistic. These companies are operating in a different universe to many of the people on this list. 5k will often be their annual IT spend. Take away these problems from your small clients using Sonicwalls or configurable software and you will be a hero forever for them. There are two reasons that I think they want to avoid tapes: a) they don't really understand the technology b) they don't want the hassle of having to change out tapes all the time. the datacenter is located at a remote facility/shared datacenter that is not staffed. If I can find a good solution for b) then I might be able to convince them to go this way. Any suggestions? _______________________________________________ Jon Luchette Emerson Hospital Technology Specialist III Work: 978-287-3369 Cell: 978-360-1379 jluchette@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx _______________________________________________ _____ From: thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Matthew Shrewsbury Sent: Thursday, April 06, 2006 8:13 AM To: thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [THIN] Re: OT: Disk-Based Backups for Small Companies A lot of people are under the impression that tapes are old technology. The truth of the matter is tape is still one of the only real reliable ways to backup large amounts of data. I would feel much safer with a disk to tape backup solution over just trusting disks. It is still early in the discussions so I am limited as to understanding why they feel this way... _______________________________________________ Jon Luchette Emerson Hospital Technology Specialist III Work: 978-287-3369 Cell: 978-360-1379 jluchette@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx _______________________________________________ _____ From: thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Matthew Shrewsbury Sent: Thursday, April 06, 2006 7:52 AM To: thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [THIN] Re: OT: Disk-Based Backups for Small Companies If you're willing to spend up to 5K why not go LTO? It has some gaping flaws IMO, but might suit. Otherwise www.peersyncsoftware.com <http://www.peersyncsoftware.com/> their product is fine for backup - synch less so. Finally avail, which is similar to persync.
