Many of the engineering/Division 1 schools in our state also "give" a laptop
to each students.  However, the cost is burried within the student's
tuition, and a clause states that the laptop equipment is property of the
school until the student graduates (his to keep).  If he transfers or drops
out, the laptop must be returned.

Angus,

YEP! We got a nice private grant. However, there are strings attached, as
always. We are a test site to see what it would take to do such a large
project. Our normal school budget for the entire operations of the school is
around $250K (classroom supplies, aides, copy machine, paper, etc.).

Several school districts, such as High schools have a 1 Laptop for each
child. Too bad the students can't take them home...hee hee.
