The Nature Store at Roma Bluffs is operated by the Friends of the Wildlife Corridor, and proceeds from that store and the Nature Store at Santa Ana National Wildlife help support projects in the Santa Ana and Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuges. Projects supported by the Friends in the past year have included Rio Reforestation and the Farmland Phase-Out and Re-vegetation program at the Lower Rio Grande Valley NWR, construction of a boardwalk/wetland viewing station at SANWR, the annual Hawk Watch at SANWR, and volunteer-related events associated with both Refuges. Income from the stores also support the Friends Land Acquisition fund, the most important asset of the Friends of the Wildlife Corridor, which is ready to use whenever strategic tracts of land for inclusion in the Lower Rio Grande Valley NWR become available for sale. The Nature Store at Roma has operated at a loss every month for more than one year now, requiring us to divert funds that could be used to support Refuge projects to cover costs of operation of the store. As a result, the Friends of the Wildlife Corridor has closed the store for the summer season, hoping to re-open it in October if conditions and traffic at site warrant.
