Very interesting hypotheses; seems like conspiracy theory can be found everywhere now, including the bird world. What a time we all are living in. But, perhaps not too many people go out now and look for birds in this nice heat. Reports during Texas summer are quite smaller in numbers compare to other parts of the year. For example Lesser Black-backed Gulls are not showing on eBird (UTC) during last two months. I did not have time to look for them but one time in June I saw maximum of 4 in one group together. This month max 2 together but again all this sighting were incidental. All were subadults - I think I heard of adult being seen also - so probably there are several of them out there on the coast. Perhaps some might treat them as 'exotics'? BTW - From personal experience I learnt that to verify sighting on eBird can take few months or forever⦠Also this was a time when many birds bred and had nests so some people might hold on and did not want to point to some spots. Anyway, 4th of July is always a critical day to me as beaches after that day look like the hurricane hit them, living only trash and 'donut' tire tracks behind with many nests completely destroyed. This year was no better than others. Mark B Bartosik Houston, Texas http://www.pbase.com/mbb/from_the_field In a message dated 7/16/2013 8:46:18 P.M. Someone of ornithological bent, who doesn't care whether birders see birds, saw and identified(maybe) the bird and photographed it. The picture and possibly the specimen will be part of a paper to be published later. Be on the lookout for it in print and collections. 2. Come to think of it the others are too preposterous to even mention. I do know that a number of people have looked for the bird and not found it. I do not understand why people would want to keep others from seeing the bird. Maybe it's caged.
