With the Visitor Center closed Monday and Tuesday (so no tram service until Wednesday), the shortest route to the service road John mentions is to walk the back end of the tram road past the grasslands, take a right at Hunter's Lane, then look for the service trail on your left a short distance after you pass Flycatcher Trail. The tram road is the paved road to your right as you walk into the park from the self-pay station at the gate, and the wooded stretch offers excellent birding. From the park entrance, the distance to the service road is a little over a mile and a half, so don't forget your water bottle.
