Also, if the variable audio out is used from the TV, then when the
customer switches the stereo to another input like FM or CD, the volume
will be too loud. Fixed audio is always the best to save speakers and
ears.

Al;
Not quite sure what you are asking. Variable and Fixed are two different
things, as you know. If he is running into a separate Stereo System.
With Surround Sound, I would highly recommend that he keeps the output
of whatever he is (supplying) "fixed". Eg. Sending a signal from a
TV...etc.
Having the "supplying" source in variable will distort his
Surround Sound audio. Rule of thumb is..when you have 2 or more units
with independent Volume controls, keep the input fixed.
Many customers are having this problem with their Satellite
Receivers, using Volume control on the Sat Receiver and trying to
equalize it with the volume on their TV or Sound system. I don't service
Sat. Receivers, but have had many calls just explaining this.
BTW..If I had charged for these nuisance calls I would have been retired
by now. But..just happens they are mostly my "good" customers, and
locally, it's a No Charge basis.

I never really took notice to what these were for until the mailman
asked me
if he could put the audio out into his surround sound system. I told him
I
didn't know but I would find out. Can you put the variable out into a
surround sound unit, I know the audio out is fixed at 1V P-P. Please
forgive
my ignorance, just never used or serviced that area.
