Ed, thanks. I should have added a note in my message that I also slid
the slide plate by hand and the guide posts loaded up all the way
without any kind of binding. It really seems as the large black loading
gear is not able to rotate far enough to engage the slide plate teeth.
The black gear can't turn as far as I think it should because the
flanges on the FL loading gear I replaced hit up against it and prevent
further rotation. I have to be doing something wrong but what?
