We have recently started collecting an estimate charge after many years of
free estimates. It has worked out real well, it really suprised me. We
charge $20 for TV and VCRs and $40 for big screens. We collect when they
bring it in. We just write up a small receipt if they ask for one. Here in
Co. we must pay to dispose of TVs so if it is not repaired the est charge
covers that. I am not sure what the other shops in town are doing. The
customer is much more likely to repair a set if they already have something
invested in it. Only a couple people have objected to pay for an estimate.
We also tell the customer what an average repair will cost for a particular
size TV so they can decide for themselves if they want to leave it. If they
have no intention to fix it then we do not want to be stuck with disposing
of it. It is true that 13" and 19" sets are seldom repairable unless it is a
combi. The combi estimate turndown rate is still 30 to 40% but if they
abandon the unit it is good to use for parts. I would recomend that
everyone collect a small charge when the TV comes in. John.
