I use a white eraser and cut it up into strips to get into the small
spots. There is no residue with the white one. Is the pencil type
white as well?

I use a pencil type (for typewriters) eraser and it works great. Easy
enough to use the brush (at the other end of the pencil) and a Q-tip
 to remove the grit.
