The question that should be asked is why does a new mode switch need to be cleaned? The answer is that the switch materials are contaminated with the various processing chemicals either during or after manufacture. The switch then contains a corrosive environment so that the problem returns shortly after the switch has been cleaned. By the way, we use a small piece of Scotchbrite, pushed around by the stem of a cut-off Q-Tip. We clean the switch with alcohol, bend the contact springs a little, and apply a small amount of a light lubricant.
