Ed, maybe you meant NTE588? Regardless, the actual number used in the RCA sets for a 164589 diode is: PFR856 which can be purchased from many suppliers for less than a buck each. These are rated 600V, 3A, 200nS. If you use an MR856, its ratings are 600V, 3A, 150nS. All specs according to their spec sheets.
